The Inspiration: Iconic Superheroes Collide

In an exclusive interview with Fleetwood, Interior Designer Michelle Boudreau said the opportunity to redesign the West House arose when the homeowners noticed her work on other iconic midcentury properties, like the House of Tomorrow, and wanted to be a part of the Modernism Week festival.

“They were architectural enthusiasts interested in sharing their home and supporting Modernism Week events,” Boudreau said. “They wanted to support the mission of Modernism Week, which is to celebrate, preserve, and educate the public about modernist architecture, design, art, and culture.”

An Indoor-Outdoor Experience

Boudreau masterfully blended modern patterns and textures in a palette that complements the Palm Springs landscape, while also adding bold pops of matte black throughout. Highlights include a sleek, recessed bar with a passthrough Fleetwood window, seamlessly tying style and function together.

Boudreau noted that the indoor-outdoor living style, so prevalent in Palm Springs, made Fleetwood the perfect choice for the project. The entire back of the home’s main living spaces are a series of floor-to-ceiling windows and massive sliding doors that open to a close up view of the San Jacinto Mountains.

“I always choose and recommend Fleetwood for their premium quality and their ability to raise the design standard by making the details of windows and doors nearly invisible, allowing the beauty of the environment to take center stage.”

Big Glass Walls

Stephen Whitfield, Fleetwood dealer and owner of Architectural Glazing in Palm Springs, worked with Boudreau to help choose the right products for performance and design, and ensured their proper installation during the renovation.

“Fleetwood’s doors and windows worked great for this remodel because the original architecture already set up large spans of glass,” Whitfield said. “. . . At this property we went with a wide variety of [Fleetwood products]. The reason for this was all detail orientated . . .”

Boudreau chose the sleek EDGE |p| Pivot Door for the new entryway, featuring a Batman emblem that, when lit just right, casts the iconic silhouette onto the ground. To maximize views, she strategically incorporated the EDGE |f| Fixed Window System along the back and sides of the home, framing the surrounding landscape.

“These thin profiles for the windows and doors create a clean, modern look and allow for great visibility of the outdoor beauty,” she said.

Highlighted Water Feature

Series 3000 Traditional Sliding Doors connect the kitchen and foyer to a serene water feature, which is echoed in the backyard. The gentle trickle in the foyer, and mirrored sounds in the backyard, add a tranquil touch to the seamless indoor-outdoor experience. The Series 3800-T Fixed Window Wall completes the front water feature, which is surrounded by glass on all sides.

Energy Efficiency

In sun-drenched areas, the Series 4070-T Multi-Slide & Pocket Doors with thermal extrusions were chosen for the master slider, backyard slider, and passthrough window, providing both efficiency and seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

“For the energy conservationist, Fleetwood has thermally broken product lines that maximize U-values and solar heat gain,” Whitfield said. “Whether you are wanting to upgrade for energy or have a desire to get rid of old drafty doors and windows, Fleetwood can drastically improve both of these concerns.”

Praise for a Job Well Done

Boudreau praised Architectural Glazing for their efficiency and expert knowledge, and Whitfield pointed out how impressed he was with Boudreau’s design choices when working with this unique vintage home.

“I love the vision of Michelle and her team. They have such a great way of coming full circle with a property and really bringing such amazing styles together, not only with this project, but past projects that we have worked on with them,” Whitfield said.
